A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance cooperation between law enforcement and justice in combating serious and organized crime, has been concluded by INTERPOL and Eurojust, the European Union’s Judicial Cooperation Unit. The MoU provides a framework for collaboration between the two organizations in a number of common areas including maritime piracy, drug trafficking, trafficking in human beings, terrorism, genocide and combating fraud. Eurojust, which has a number of agreements with states and organizations outside the European Union, said combining forces with the world’s largest international police organization, with 190 member countries, will augment its ability to bring to justice those at the heart of international crime.
Meanwhile, INTERPOL said the agreement with Eurojust is an important step in the development of police and judicial cooperation, which will enable INTERPOL to provide even greater assistance to law enforcement on the ground, in Europe and beyond. Each organization will establish a contact point to coordinate cooperation, and the MoU also includes the possibility for joint training activities, exchange of expertise and best practice, provision of strategic and technical information and to combine efforts to provide expertise and support to joint investigation teams.
